Don’t call him Shirley, but surely Leslie Nielsen will be Missed

Leslie Nielsen
Leslie Nielsen, a dramatic actor turned slapstick genius, has died at age 84. Nielsen died of complications of pneumonia in a hospital near his home in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, surrounded by family and friends. “We are sadden by the passing of beloved actor Leslie Nielsen, probably best remembered as Lt. Frank Drebin in The Naked Gun series of pictures, but who enjoyed a more than 60-year career in motion pictures and television,” said a statement from Nielsen’s family released through his rep.

Nielsen was perhaps one of Hollywood’s first truly beloved Nerds. He was best known for his roles in “Airplane” and the “Naked Gun” series. Accordingly to IMDB, he had appeared in over 100 films and 1,500 television programs over the span of his career. In that span, he portrayed over 220 characters.

Resident Evil

Movie Nerd Rating: ★★★☆☆
Source: HBO HD

Arguably the best movie based off of a video game to date, Resident Evil is an awesome action flick. Several well-known actors, great plot, brutal death scenes, freakish monsters, hot chicks, zombies, you name it.

A special military unit, along with a few citizens, fights an out of control mob of hundreds of scientists who have mutated into flesh-eating freaks after an accident in a secret underground laboratory. Along the way, you see Milla Jovovich’s nipple.

Forrest Gump (mini review)

Movie Nerd Rating: ★★★★½
Source: TV – AMC HD

It’s hard not to like the movie Forrest Gump, starring Tom Hanks as a lovable dufus who stumps upon some of the most historic events in the American culture.

The movie, which won an academy award, also stars Gary Sinese, Robin Wright and Sally Field. Not only is it a great movie, it has arguably the best soundtrack ever compiled for a movie.

The film was based off of a book by the same name. The book and movie are a lot alike, but very different. The movie might be better, as Tom Hanks nails the role of Forrest, but they could have cut the ‘running across the country’ bit.

A must watch movie!

Predators

Movie Nerd Rating: ★★★☆☆
Source: DVD

Being a fan huge fan of the original, Predator, I was pretty pumped to watch Predators. My expectations for the movie weren’t exactly high (the second Predator movie with Danny Glover was terrible), but it figured to at least be something decent enough to cheeb out to on the couch.

The movie, starring Adrian Brody, was nothing faboulous…but it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. Parts were actually pretty sweet.

Predators has a different storyline than the original, with the characters being flown into another planet to be hunted like animals. This time, the hunt is on their turf. Though the storyline is different, the movie borrows heavily from the first, including the music.

That includes Adrian Brody’s horrible attempt at Arnold Schwartnawhatever oneliners. Brody also suffers from Christian Bale Batman Accent Syndrome. One thing Brody should never do again in a movie is try to act tough. Great actor, just not in action films. Another negative about Predators is that they killed off Danny Trejo way too early.

Still, the movie is worth the rental fee. Watch it in HD and you will have a good time.

Cannonball Run II

Movie Nerd Rating: ★½☆☆☆
Source: On Demand

I realize this is a movie from the early 1980s, but it’s beyond horrible. That comes as a slight surprise, as the cast for this movie is loaded with superstars.

Burt Reynolds, Dom DeLuise, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Shirley MacLaine, Telly Savalas, Tony Danza and even an early Jackie Chan have a role in this film, not to mention almost everyone from the Godfather movies. The star-studded cast couldn’t save this movie. Neither do the cars they considered cool back in the 80s.

One saving grace on this movie is the appearance of a monkey driving a car. Seeing Daisy Duke cleavage was a bonus, too.

JJ Abrahms did this movie justice.

Minus a few cheesy parts, this movie was fantastic! No wonder it got one of the highest reviews I have ever seen on Rotten Tomatoes.
I liked it so much…I bought a copy for myself.
Uhura is gorgeous.

Soul Men

Movie Nerd Rating: ★★★½☆
Source: Showtime

I should be slapped for putting off watching the movie Soul Men. Bernie Mack’s last movie might not be an award-winning comedy, but it’s definitely a good movie certain to make you laugh.

The two remaining members (Samuel L. Jackson, Bernie Mack) of the popular soul band from the 1970′s, The Real Deal, take a road trip to the Apollo Theater for a musical tribute to their recently deceased front man. As they travel across the country in a series of adventures and misdventures, they get to the bottom of their old grievances.

What ensues is pure comedy gold!

I should have never put this movie off for so long. Bad Movie Nerd!
