All About Steve (mini review)

Movie Nerd Rating: ★★½☆☆
Source: HBO

Purchase All About SteveSandra Bullock and Bradley Cooper star in this simple, yet very cheesy romantic comedy featuring one of the only movies about a girl nerd.

All About Steve is a comfortable movie that’s comical in spots.

Nothing spectacular, but a good movie to watch with your girlfriend.

Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps

Movie Nerd Rating: ★★★★☆
Source: On Demand

Purchase Wall Street: Money Never SleepsGordon Gekko Returns!

Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, Oliver Stone’s follow-up to the original Wall Street, is set in the midst of the economic bubble of 2008, seven years after the infamous Gordon Gekko is released from prison. Gekko was sent away at the end of the first film for insider trading, and a slew of other charges. While he was away, he wrote a book titled Is Greed Good?

Gekko declares, “The mother of all evil is speculation.” He also has a few other memorable quotes in this movie, just like the first.

“Money is a bitch that never sleeps.”
“The best memory I know is hurt.”

Enter Gekko’s daughter, who is dating Shia LaBeouf’s character Jake Moore. Gekko uses Moore to get back in his daughter’s good graces, as well as to exact revenge on a few unsuspecting enemies and earn his empire back.

Gekko eventually turns $100 million into a a billion, and ends up getting the last laugh with everyone. But, for better or for worse, he grows a heart and seeks time with his family. “Money is not the prime asset in life,” Gekko declares. “Time is.”

The cinematography in this movie is sensational. The soundtrack to the movie is a spectacular tribute to 1980′s coke scene, and remains consistent with the original. The film also maintains the integrity of the original with an appearance of Bud Fox. Fox inadvertently meets Gekko at a party, and they discuss old times.

Overall, I was surprised at how well done this movie was. With the exception of Shia’s acting, and the cameo of Sheen’s character Fox, the movie was spectacular. It is highly recommended by this Movie Nerd.

Top Ten Christmas Movies on TV in 2010

Having spent the 2010 Christmas Holiday in typical fashion–alone, eating frozen pizza and watching movies–I decided to try and make a list holiday movies that were on television yesterday. I didn’t watch all of the films from start to finish, but I did manage to catch a great deal of the ridiculous amount of festive programming that streamed through my HDTV. As such, I am fully prepared to make a list of the top ten Christmas movies.

No, you won’t see a many of the older movies on this list, although Miracle on 34th Street does bring back some fond memories from elementary school. And you won’t see any Ben Affleck movies on this list, either.

Enough of my babbling, here’s my list…

A Christmas Story

Movie Nerd Rating: ★★★★★
Source: TBS ALL DAY

What better way to celebrate the holidays than watching one of the world’s all time favorite nerds in the movie, A Christmas Story. Hands down, this is the greatest movie to watch at Christmas time.

Rotten Tomatoes hits the nail on the head: Both warmly nostalgic and darkly humorous, A Christmas Story deserves its status as a holiday perennial.

Fragile…must be French.

The Road

Movie Nerd Rating: ★½☆☆☆
Source: On Demand

This movie should be renamed to: The Road to Complete Boredom, because it is awful. Awful could be putting it politely.

The movie is about a father (played by Viggo Mortensen) and son wandering a post-apocalyptic wasteland in search for something. It’s never really clear what they are in search of, or what exactly destroyed civilization. For that matter, it’s never really clear what the point of this movie is.

At the end, Guy Pearce makes an appearance. He doesn’t really help the movie any, though.

I’m being nice by giving this a 1.5 rating. Skip it unless you’re forced to watch it as punishment.

Daybreakers

Movie Nerd Rating: ★½☆☆☆
Source: On Demand

First Impression: I Am Legend meets Blade meets Vampire in Brooklyn.

The IMDB description made this movie seem fairly interesting.

In the year 2019, a plague has transformed most every human into vampires. Faced with a dwindling blood supply, the fractured dominant race plots their survival; meanwhile, a researcher works with a covert band of vamps on a way to save humankind.

In reality, Daybreakers is craptastic. Aside from a decent cast, featuring Ethan Hawke and Willem Dafoe, this movie is arguably one of the worst vampire movies I have had the misfortune to watch. With the mass rush of vampire movies and TV shows, Hollywood will produce anything with blood-thursting creatures. Daybreakers is a prime example of that.

Hot Tub Time Machine

Movie Nerd Rating: ★★★★★
Source: DVD

Easily, Hot Tub Time Machine is the best movie of 2010. It’s a comedic masterpiece featuring John Cusack, Rob Corddry and Craig Robinson.

John Cusack’s character, Adam just got dumped by his girlfriend. Rob Corddry’s character has alienated himself from all his friends and hates his life. Craig Robinson’s character, Nick, has a controlling wife that humiliates him. Chevy Chase even plays the minor role of the Hot Tub repair guy.

After a crazy night of drinking in a ski resort hot tub, everyone wakes up in the year 1986 and the ridiculous hilarity begins. When they realize they’ve traveled back in time, they are torn between reliving the past the same as before, or making changes.

Sex, drugs and 80′s music…something that normally might scare most people ends up being the perfect combination for comedy genius. The film is also a quotable masterpiece. “Hey, it’s the douche bag from Karate Kid Three.”

Must Watch!
